How to become a Residential Mortgage Loan Originator

Step 1

Take the Exam Prep course (which includes both state and national portions)

 

Step 2

Log onto www.stateregulatoryregistry.org/NMLS You must create an account.  Once you have created an account you will be assigned a user name and password

 

Step 3

Register for the National exam through Spencer Training and Testing Development, Inc. www.spencertesting.com to test at an authorized Pearson Vue site.  Please be advised that you must pass the exam with a 75% or higher score.

 

If you fail the exam you must wait 30 days prior to re-taking the exam.  A candidate can only test 3 times and then must wait 6 months before re-testing.

 

Step 4

After you have successfully passed the exam you must register through the NMLS site at  www.stateregulatoryregistry.org and print off a MU4 form this form must be completed
and filed with NMLS by August 31, 2010.

 

Step 5

Complete 15 hours of continuing education (CE) by December 31, 2010; and after that you must
complete 8 hours of CE annually beginning calendar year 2011.  File a MU4 form along with the appropriate fee.

 

***Please note if you were licensed before July 31, 2009, you must pass the exam prior to renewing your license in 2011.  If you were licensed after July 31, 2009, you must pass the exam prior to filing form MU4 by August 31, 2010.

 

THE NEW NMLS CHANGES WILL AFFECT ALL INDIVIDUALS IN THE MORTGAGE INDUSTRY (BOTH EXISTING AND PRE-LICENSED) INDIVIDUALS.
